It is time you stop using refined sugar and turn to natural alternatives. Use coconut nectar syrup, raw honey or stevia in its place.

Refined sugar is one of the unhealthiest foods in the modern diet. And while many know its harmful effects when consumed excessively, many still eat it anyway. The result: an increased risk to epidemic health problems, such as obesity, diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, cardiovascular problems, and other chronic illnesses.

Sugar is addictive so removing it from your day-to-day eating pattern can be difficult, however, it is not impossible. With the help of natural sweeteners, you can still find sweetness albeit without the alarming risk to adverse health consequences.

Natural Sweeteners

  1. Coconut Nectar Syrup

Coconut nectar syrup comes from the sap of a coconut blossom. It is extracted by climbing the tree, making a cut on the flower bud, and then tapping into the incision to draw out the liquid. Once sufficient sap is drawn out, it is boiled to evaporate excess water content until it transforms into a syrup.

The unrefined and traditional production methods allows the preservation of its nutritional content and a low glycemic index. This natural sweetener contains traces of vitamin C, vitamin B1, B2, B3, and B6 along with amino acids, antioxidants, and natural enzymes. Moreover, it also holds calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, nitrogen, potassium, and zinc, making it nutrient-dense sweetener.

Furthermore, it is able to retain a low glycemic score with a value of 35. This is one of the lowest values among sweeteners. Raw honey comes from the sweet nectars collected by bees from pollens. Bees collect and store pollens into the honeycomb. Over time, the pollens liquefy in the chamber until it becomes a syrup.

Without filtering and heating, raw honey is able to maintain its natural composition. As a result, it is able to preserve its nutritious structure. It contains traces of vitamin A, B, C, D, and E as well as calcium, iodine, iron, magnesium, potassium, and sodium along with antioxidants, amino acids, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Since raw honey is sweeter than the regular dose of refined sugar, you need to reduce the amount you use. Use it in a 1:1/2 replacement ratio. For every 1 cup of refined sugar, use ½ cup of raw honey.

  1. Stevia

Stevia comes from the leaf of a stevia plant. The leaves of the herb are placed in hot water to boil until the liquid becomes clear rather than green leaving the glycosides in it which are responsible for its unique sweetness. Stevia is calorie-free and carbohydrate-free.

Stevia is extremely sweet. It is 100 to 200 times sweeter than sugar. When using stevia as a substitute for refined sugar, use a 1:50 replacement ratio. For every 1 cup of refined sugar, use 1 teaspoon of stevia in its place.

Take out refined sugar of your pantry and throw it out in the wastebasket. Skip using overly processed food and stick to natural and organic foods. Use coconut nectar syrup, raw honey, or stevia.
